Transforming Inequalities into Opportunities
The 2025 UN SDG Action Awards showcased the incredible efforts of changemakers and initiatives that are reshaping the world, turning inequalities into opportunities for millions. Held in Rome, these awards recognized remarkable individuals and projects from Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Turkiye, marking the eighth edition of this commendable initiative.
Embracing Changemakers: A Celebration of Courage
This year’s Changemaker Award was a tie between two exceptional women who have courageously bridged gaps in human rights and mental health support. Julienne Lusenge, a dedicated human rights advocate from the Democratic Republic of Congo, has spent her life confronting violence and building peace, showing the power of collective strength. With her words echoed by Sandrine Lusamba, she stated, "I thank the UN SDG Action Campaign on behalf of all Congolese women and men who fight every day for peace and dignity." On the other hand, Jin Dawod, a Syrian refugee, founded a mental health platform that now supports thousands of displaced individuals. "This award is not the end, it’s the beginning," said Jîn, encapsulating the essence of hope.
The Power of Creativity in Driving Change
The Creativity Award went to Smartel, a Nigerian initiative that combats food insecurity through hydroponic farming methods. Founded by Smart Israel, Smartel transforms community agriculture, providing new livelihoods for women and youth while addressing serious food shortages. "To every young dreamer, always remember, we are the bridge between the failures of the past and blessings of the future," emphasized Israel while gratifying the power of creativity in influencing positive change.
Resilience in Action: CUFA's Inspiring Journey
Brazilian organization CUFA was awarded the Resilience Award for its extraordinary efforts in transforming favelas into thriving hubs of creativity and innovation. President Marcus Vinícius Athayde passionately stated, "CUFA is about giving support and opportunities to communities, kids, women, and men, allowing everyone to live without poverty and inequality." Their approach emphasizes that development can and should come from the very heart of the community itself.
A Call to Action: The Fight Against Statelessness
The UNHCR’s #IBelong Campaign received an Honourable Mention for its decade-long efforts to combat statelessness affecting millions worldwide. Maha Mamo, a representative of the campaign, poignantly reflected, "Statelessness is an invisible cage. Through the #IBelong Campaign, laws changed, solutions were found, and many finally belong." This campaign exemplifies the profound need for identity and belonging in our global narrative.
The Evening's Powerful Performances and Inspiring Messages
The ceremony not only recognized the efforts of these outstanding individuals but was also graced by performances from award-winning Italian artist Diodato and Nigerian artivist Cill, who united voices for peace and change. Marina Ponti, Global Director of the UN SDG Action Campaign, concluded with an empowering message: "We can all be heroes of tomorrow. Let’s not be frozen by the weight of inequality. Rather, let’s be moved by the power of possibility. Because the future is not something we inherit—it’s something we shape together." This belief in collective action highlights the importance of individual and community efforts towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
