Celebrating Positivity: The Story Behind Yay!Day
In a world that often feels overwhelmed by negativity, one local teenager has taken it upon herself to uplift her community through a remarkable initiative. Zoey Boukedes, a high school senior, founded Yay!Day, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting positive thinking and acting as a beacon of hope for many. Inspired at a young age by the bullying she witnessed, Zoey decided to take action. Thus began her mission to create a day centered around positivity, held annually on October 30th as a much-needed respite before the holiday season.
Turning a Simple Idea into a Movement
The first Yay!Day was a small affair, born from the creativity of Zoey and her family. As the idea gained traction on social media, excitement grew, setting the stage for Yay!Day’s expansion into a much larger initiative. Two years later, when the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly changed life as we knew it, Zoey’s commitment to spreading positivity became even more crucial. She adapted her message to resonate in a time of uncertainty, focusing on the importance of maintaining a positive mindset even when faced with challenges.
Crafting a Community of Encouragement
Fast forward to today, and Yay!Day has blossomed into a fully-fledged 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Zoey has successfully raised over $225,000, funding scholarships and supporting various local charities. Her work goes beyond fundraising; she educates fellow students on the benefits of positivity and encourages them to embrace a mindset that fosters resilience. With a growing membership, the Yay!Day Club at Hough High School boasts 250 devoted members actively involved in mentorship and community service.
Impactful Partnerships and Future Plans
Collaboration has been key to the Yay!Day’s success. The organization partners with various local groups, such as Bags of Hope and FeedNC, maximizing their reach and impact. With plans for events like a spring comedy show to further raise money and awareness, Zoey embodies the spirit of leadership and community service. Her aspirations don’t stop at Yay!Day; she intends to pursue higher education in pre-med, aiming to become an immunologist. This ambition reflects her strong desire to contribute to health and wellness beyond her immediate community.
Creating a Ripple Effect of Positivity
As a leader, Zoey’s vision is not only about personal success but about creating a legacy of positivity and encouragement. “If we only see the negative side of things,” she reflects, “how can we learn to see the positive?” Her message resonates especially with young people, offering them tools to counteract negativity in their lives. As the largest student-led club at her school, Yay!Day serves as a platform for teens to learn, grow, and thrive in supportive environments. The encouragement they receive can help combat the pressures and stresses of adolescence, exemplifying why community engagement is vital.
Why Positivity Matters More Than Ever
Incorporating positivity into our daily lives has profound implications for our mental health and well-being. Research has shown that a positive mindset can lead to greater academic and personal achievement, stronger relationships, and an improved ability to cope with life’s challenges. Yay!Day’s approach not only empowers individuals but cultivates a supportive community where members encourage one another to thrive. By harnessing the power of positivity, Zoey and her fellow club members are shaping a compassionate future.

As we reflect on Zoey's inspiring journey, it’s clear that even small initiatives can create significant ripple effects within communities. Yay!Day serves as a reminder that everyone can contribute to a more positive world, regardless of age or background.
